QUESTION ONE: Read the following text:

1 Today, English is one of the most important languages of the world. It is difficult for us to imagine that this is a recent phenomenon. In Shakespeare's time only a few million people spoke English. In those days, other countries in Europe did not think it was important and it was unknown in the rest of the world

2 English has become a world language because countries outside England adopted it as a first language. This started to happen in the 17th century when people from Europe first went to America .It continued with emigration to Africa, Australia and India. However, it was America, with its huge growth in population, which gave the greatest push to the English language and helped it become what it is today.

3 People who speak English can be put in three groups. First there are those who have learned it as a first language. Then there are those who have learned it as a second language in a mainly bilingual society- where most people use two languages. Finally, there are those who have to use it for a practical purpose- administrative, professional, or educational .One person in seven of the world's population belongs to one of these three groups.

4 There are many reasons why English is so popular. First it is very simple in form. For example, adjectives do not have to agree with the noun. We can have a happy boy, and a happy girl. Another reason is that the language is very flexible; for example nouns and verbs often have the same form - we can drink water and also water the flowers. Also adjectives can be used as verbs -If our clothes are soiled, they need to be cleaned. A third reason is that the language is open to vocabulary from outside. Most world languages have contributed some words to the English language.

5 English is the language of business and technology, sport and aviation. An amazing 60% of the world's telephone calls are made in English.
Geographically, it is the most widespread language on earth, second only to Mandarin Chinese in the number who speak it. This will no doubt continue. However, the idea that other languages will die out is not something that is likely to happen!

Thomas Edison was born in Ohio in America. It is hard to believe that Edison went to school for only three months and gave so much for the world. After he was out of school, his mother decided to teach him herself. Years later, he invented the first motion picture cameras and he improved the telephone to carry voices over long distance. His greatest invention was the electric light, telegraph and the batteries.
